An outing that
stays indoors
when the wind blows in off the sea
About ten minutes' drive from IJmuiden to an indoor game park on the Handelskade in Beverwijk. 9 game rooms, all under one roof. Rain changes nothing about the plan.
- 10 min drive from IJmuiden
- 70 people fit in at the same time
- 9 game rooms, all indoors
By the sea, almost everything is outdoors
IJmuiden faces the North Sea. That is lovely, until it starts to rain. The beach, the dunes, the harbour: most of what you can do there with a group of children hangs on the weather.
PlayKinetix is the opposite. It is an indoor game park on the Handelskade in Beverwijk, with 9 game rooms behind a door. Light-up floors that react to your feet, walls of buttons that light up, challenges you can only win together.
That is why this page exists. Not because there is too little to do in IJmuiden, but because there is little to do that stays dry.
What the children actually do here
Gaming sounds like a sofa and a screen. That is not how it works here.
On your feet the whole time
No screen, no controller. There is running, spinning and jumping until the children go red in the face.
A wristband keeps count
Everyone gets one round their wrist and the scores run along automatically. Nobody has to count, and there is no arguing about who won either.
9 separate rooms
Every room is a different game. You move on, so a group keeps moving instead of standing in a queue.
Room for 70 people
Seventy places in total, so a group of forty children fits in comfortably.
From IJmuiden to the Handelskade
A good seven kilometres, about ten minutes by car or in a couple of minibuses.
There is no train, and we are not going to make that sound better than it is: IJmuiden has no station. For an after-school care group that means minibuses or parents driving, and that transport belongs in the sums for the afternoon.
Parking is free and right outside the door, Handelskade 2. Not the prettiest corner of Beverwijk, but practical when you turn up with four minibuses at once.
Does it fit into an after-school care afternoon?
On Wednesday and Thursday it does. On Monday and Tuesday it does not, because the park is closed then. That knocks two options straight off your planning.
On Wednesday and Thursday the doors open at 12:00 and the last ticket starts at 18:00. Friday is also from 12:00, but then until 22:00. So in a holiday week this is an afternoon programme, not a morning one.
Count on an hour and a half inside. With the drive there and back you are looking at about half an afternoon.
Staff training days and holiday days are perfectly fine, as long as it is not a Monday or a Tuesday.
What it costs, without talking around it
The Sport Deal is €24.50 per person from 5 people: 45 minutes of play, a break with crisps and unlimited squash, and then another 45 minutes. An hour and a half in total.
That is more than most indoor playgrounds nearby ask. We know that. What stands against it is something different: 9 rooms in which the children themselves play the leading part.
You can hold a date with no obligation before you book definitively. Handy when it still has to go past an activities budget or a parents' committee. Otherwise, first have a look at what is going on during the holiday weeks.
Questions childcare staff ask
From what age is this fun?
From about 6, groep 3. That is immediately the awkward bit for after-school care, because your group starts at 4. If you are coming with a wide age range, talk it through in advance to work out how to divide them.
How do I keep an eye on twenty-five children in separate rooms?
Fair question, because this is not one space where you can see everything at once. What works is splitting the group up, with a supervisor per room. Tell us how many supervisors are coming when you hold the date, and you can go through the arrangement in advance.
Is it not too much stimulation?
There is light, sound and pace, and for a child who copes badly with that it is a lot. The rooms are done one at a time, so a child does not have to go into the next room. Let us know in advance if there are children who become overwhelmed quickly.
The number of children is only final on the morning itself. Is that possible?
That is the case at every after-school care group. So hold the date with no obligation first and leave the number open for now. How late you can still make changes is something you agree when you get in touch.
Other towns nearby
Is your group coming from a different town? Then the route and the journey time are set out separately there.
Filling in a rainy day in advance
Hold a date with no obligation and only look at the numbers afterwards. Do make it a Wednesday, Thursday or Friday.
Autumn holiday 10 to 18 October: 20 minutes of extra play time for free
With every individual ticket you play 80 instead of 60 minutes, for the same price. From Monday 12 to Thursday 15 October we're also open extra hours from 10:30.
