Zaandam is big enough for all sorts, but when it comes to birthdays you soon run into the same few places: the children have already been three times and it's the same every time.
On the other side of the Noordzeekanaal, in Beverwijk, is PlayKinetix, with 9 interactive game rooms where the floors and the walls play along. For most families from the Zaan region that's about half an hour's drive and something they haven't come across before.
From Zaandam to the Handelskade
You take the A8 heading west, but it ends at Westzaan — the link to the A9 was never built. From there you continue on the N246 and cross the Noordzeekanaal through the Wijkertunnel. Allow about 25 minutes outside rush hour. At the end you park for free by the entrance.
Setting off from Zaandam-Zuid or Zaandijk makes a few minutes' difference in both directions. In the evening rush hour it often grinds to a halt by the tunnel — a party that starts in the morning or early afternoon makes for a noticeably calmer drive.
By public transport you have to change: Beverwijk is on the Kennemerlijn, which you reach via Uitgeest or via Haarlem. That soon turns the journey into three quarters of an hour. With a group of children, the car is honestly the better choice here.

A kids' party costs €24.50 per child for an hour and a half of play, with your own table, lemonade and something to nibble on. If you'd like longer, choose the XL version with two blocks of 45 minutes. The morning party on Saturday and Sunday starts at €19.50 per child.
