half an hour up the road

Half an hour's drive deserves more than a quick hour

You are arranging something for the team: sixteen players, a couple of staff, a team kitty that is not bottomless. From Hoofddorp, Beverwijk is about half an hour's drive. We are not going to keep quiet about that, because it shapes how you plan this.

PlayKinetix is an indoor game park on the Handelskade. 9 game rooms that keep you on your feet the whole time: floors that react to your feet, walls covered in buttons, challenges that only come off when the team talks to each other. No controller, but a wristband that keeps score.

Rain, storm or frost: none of it changes the plan.

If you are driving anyway, do not plan just an hour

The Sport Deal lasts an hour and a half: three quarters of an hour of play, a break with crisps and squash, another three quarters of an hour. For a club round the corner that is exactly right. For a team that has been on the road for half an hour it feels short.

In that case pick a package that includes food, so that after the last round the group is still sitting at a table instead of reaching straight for their coats.

Agree in advance what time you are driving back, too. Splitting eighteen children between five cars takes longer in the dark than you think.

The route: one provincial road, one motorway

From the Raadhuisplein along the Kruisweg to the N205, the Drie Merenweg, north past Vijfhuizen. At the Rottepolderplein onto the A9 towards Alkmaar, through the Wijkertunnel under the Noordzeekanaal, and the Beverwijk exit straight afterwards. Via the Wijkermeerweg you are on the De Pijp business park in no time.

You can park for free right outside the door. No disc, no ticket machine, plenty of space, even on a Saturday afternoon.

Public transport is not an option for a group. Hoofddorp is on the Schiphollijn and Beverwijk on the Kennemerlijn; the two do not meet. Going via Sloterdijk takes well over an hour.

Why those kilometres are worth it

In Hoofddorp itself you can go bowling, jump on trampolines or do an escape room. That is closer. This is what you get in return.

Nobody sits on the bench

No taking turns and no queueing for a lane. The whole team plays at once, and the staff who thought they would just watch are sweating within ten minutes.

It produces a result

The wristband tracks everything. For a team that plays for points, that is the difference between an activity and a match.

Being indoors is the whole point here

You plan this in November or February without ever opening the rain radar. A pitch cannot do that.

A team of sixteen on the Sport Deal comes to 392 euros. You can hold a date with no obligation before you book definitively. More variants are on the page for schools and sports clubs.

In Haarlemmermeer every team wants to finish the season at once

Hoofddorp has just over 81,000 inhabitants and sixteen per cent of them are under sixteen. You can see it on the pitches: new estates full of families, clubs with dozens of youth teams, and all of them round off their season in the same two weeks of June.

So pick a date early. Friday and Saturday evenings go first, and those are exactly the evenings that work for you.

On top of that, the world headquarters of the professional footballers' union sits inside your municipal boundary. A nice fact for the journey; it does nothing for the score on your wristband.

What team managers ask us

Can we come on a weekday evening?

On Monday and Tuesday we are closed. On Wednesday and Thursday you can start until 18:00, so after an evening training session you will not make it. Friday works best: you can start up to 22:00.

We are coming with eighteen players and three staff. Does that fit?

Yes. The park takes 70 people at a time and you go round the 9 game rooms in rotations, so there is no waiting for a room to come free. You can book from as few as 5 people.

Is it not too childish for a JO15 or MO17?

No. No ball pit, no little screens. It is running, aiming, reacting and urging each other on because the score is behind. The youngest teams enjoy it, the oldest get fiercely competitive.

Do we have to know now who is coming along?

No. Hold the date with no obligation first, and it stays reserved while you are still waiting on the last few parents.
