A team outing that doesn't depend on the weather

There is plenty to do with a team in Alkmaar: bowling, escape rooms, laser tag, a boat trip through the canals. It's just that those options feel rather different in October than they do in June. Here that makes no difference at all. Everything is indoors, in 9 interactive game rooms, and you only notice it's raining on the walk back to the car.

What happens in those rooms is not a screen game. The floor responds to your feet, walls full of buttons light up, and some of the challenges only work out if you talk them through together. Everyone gets a wristband that keeps score. No controller, and no colleague watching from a bench. Want to see what kind of rooms they are first? Take a look at the game rooms.

Beverwijk lies about half an hour south of Alkmaar. That is not just around the corner, and we won't pretend otherwise. But there is a motorway between the two, and a direct train.

From Alkmaar to the Handelskade

By car you're here in about half an hour. From the centre you take the Bergerweg onto the A9 and head south past Heiloo, Akersloot and Uitgeest. Pay attention at the Beverwijk interchange: don't carry straight on into the Wijkertunnel towards Amsterdam, but keep right onto the A22 and take exit 1 immediately.

We're on the De Pijp business park, just behind the station. Parking is free and right outside the door, so no paid car park.

Come by train and nobody has to drive. The same local train that links Alkmaar with Haarlem stops in Beverwijk on the way, twice an hour, with no changes. From the station it's an eight-minute walk. For a team that wants to linger after the gaming, that saves the whole discussion about who stays sober. Do check when the last train back leaves before the evening gets away from you.

Beverwijk and Alkmaar are on the same railway line. From a lot of other towns in the region you have to change trains; from Alkmaar you don't.

Does this work for adults too?

Let's be honest: on a Saturday afternoon there are children's parties running around here. That doesn't make it a children's place. This is what a team of colleagues actually notices.

The score is real

Every wristband tracks points, so there's a result at the end. Enough to turn a quiet department competitive within ten minutes.

The fastest doesn't win

In some of the rooms it comes down to timing, sequence and talking to each other. The colleague who runs hardest gets nowhere there without the rest. That's the bit of team building nobody feels awkward about.

You will be moving

An hour and a half on your feet is an hour and a half on your feet. Put a line in the invitation saying flat shoes work better than smart ones.

No plan B needed

Everything is indoors. A date in November is just as usable as a date in June.

What it costs

The amounts are per person. The bigger the group, the lower the rate per head. With the Fun Deal that difference is biggest.

How an afternoon or evening runs

Game time is an hour and a half. The question organisers always ask is what happens during the rest of the time.

  1. 1on arrivalWristbands on

Everyone gets a band and a short briefing. After that you start straight away.

  2. 2an hour and a halfThrough the rooms

You play in small groups and rotate, so you're not all standing at the same door at once.

  3. 3afterwardsSnacks to follow

With Game & Bites and the Drinks Deal you sit down together. That's the moment the discussion about the scores breaks loose.

  4. 4at the endHeading home

The car is right outside, or it's an eight-minute walk back to the station.

Which day works?

We're closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. A lot of teams automatically pick a date at the start of the week; that won't work here.

On Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays you can start up to 18:00. On Fridays and Saturdays up to 22:00, which makes those the days for an outing that only begins after work. For groups we agree a suitable time together.

If you're tied to a particular week — around Alkmaars Ontzet on 8 October, for instance, when many Alkmaar businesses are closed — book the date well in advance.

Questions we get from Alkmaar

What does a team outing cost per person?

The Fun Deal starts at €33.50 from six people and drops along with the group size to €24.50 from thirty-five people. That includes an hour and a half in all the game rooms and a drink. If you want food with it, you end up with Game & Bites or the Drinks Deal.

Isn't this mainly something for children?

There are a lot of children's parties here during the day, that's true. But the rooms make no distinction: the floor reacts just as fiercely for everyone. The difference is in what you book alongside it, not in the games themselves.

Isn't an hour and a half short for a company outing?

As game time it's exactly right; carrying on until you drop doesn't work. With the welcome and the snacks afterwards it fills an afternoon or an evening. Want something shorter? An hour of gaming is enough.

How many colleagues can we come with?

The Fun Deal and Game & Bites start from six people, the Drinks Deal from eight. Seventy people fit in the park in total.
